
Beer has overtaken red wine as the best daily habit to help avoid having a heart attack, according to research. The secret is thought to lie in the high levels of vitamin B6 found in beer which prevent the build-up of a harmful chemical in the body, homocysteine, known to cause heart disease. Experts have previously hailed red wine as a good heart-protector because
it is known to help prevent blood clots and is rich in antioxidants which 'mop up' harmful chemicals thought to cause heart disease. But research suggests that beer may have the edge over wine and other spirits where health is concerned. Drinking up to three quarters of a pint of beer a day ? the equivalent of 40ml of alcohol ? was found to increase B6 in blood plasma by 30 per cent. Researchers from the TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute in Utrechtseweg, Holland, found that the vitamin prevented the build up of homocysteine, an amino acid metabolite known to cause cardiovascular disease. They studied 11 healthy men aged between 44 and 59 over a period of 12 weeks. Each drank beer, red wine, Dutch gin and water for three weeks with their evening meal in random order.
